Thankful

With Thanksgiving around the corner I wanted to take a minute to think about
what I am thankful for (here it goes):

* The INTERNET...LoVe It! Who doesn't.....thank yoooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuu

* Microwavable pancakes...how else am I suppose to make pancakes at 6:30 a.m. while dressing myself, doing every one's hair, making lunches and getting to school on time.

*thank you pony tail holders, baseball caps and big sunglasses...the standard Mom uniform for morning drop off.  I can't look fabulous for a.m. drop off...remember I've been microwaving pancakes and doing every one's hair.

* Instagram, it's fun, I love to see what everyone will share.

* Diet Coke, Oh so thankful, I drink tons and love it. My butt would BLOW UP if I was drinking regular coke.

* Spraytans because without them I would glow in the dark (I am so pale). Thank you Amanda for coming to my house once a week to make me copper tone tan.

* Mascara...I've said it once I'll say it again,I love mascara. I wouldn't care if they made it out of tar, it's awesome!!!!!!

* Incredibly thankful that I can not only walk but can wear HIGH HEELS...why wouldn't any woman want to heels, your legs look better and you look thinner. It's a win/win!

* Thankful for friends that would slap a candy bar out of my mouth.  That's a good friend.

* Turkey....lean and yummy.

* DVR, without that little devise I would never get to see any of the shows I like.

* My Nespresso machine, doesn't matter how I get my caffeine...hot or cold, just give it to me.

*Bleach, color and blow dryers...thank youuuuuuuuuuu Nichole you are awesome.

*Plastic surgery, I haven't had it yet but I am thankful it's available...eye lift, lipo. I say if you need it, do it...whatever the need: wrinkles, saggie boobs, suck the fat, make the stomach the size of a quarter - just do it, but find a good doctor and be thankful you can.

* super thankful for my dishwasher and washer/dryer...I could not be Amish!

* The Judge, he totally puts up with all my sarcasm and gets when I'm messing around (like with this post).

* Little Einstein, who is soooooooooooooooooooo smart he's been picked (after a scoring the BEST on a written test) to represent his school (with two other children) in this years county wide Spelling Bee.

* Even more thankful that we did not have to study one day for Little Einstein to make the Spelling Bee (he's a natural). Incredible!!!!

* Super thankful that Pookie's new horse is still alive (lots of horse drama recently) and even more thankful that Prada (horse's name) is not trying to kick my Pookie and is a sweet filly.

* Thankful that Pookie is not afraid to get on a horse and jump, run...fall. She's fearless and I love that, I could not do what she does on a horse.

* Seriously, I am thankful for the two super gifted children I have been blessed with, my family and friends  as well as all the other incredible blessing in my life.

I'm also thankful that I do not take everything (including myself) so serious. It's not about who makes a prettier bow or wears skinny jeans better.

What is the silliest thing you are thankful for?  The silliest...please and thank you.

Pumpkin Ice Cream

I know this is last minute, but it takes about 5 minutes to make so it's perfect.
Yes I live in the land of Ice Cream and I have two children who rarely eat it. Strange I know, but true. Now with that being said I can drag them over to the dark side of a sugary sweet coma with pumpkin ice cream if I whip up a quick batch.

Pumpkin Ice Cream
1 half gallon of Homemade Vanilla (yes we use Blue Bell, but your favorite Homemade Vanilla will work)
1 jar of William Sonoma Pumpkin Butter
Side Note: If you can not get your hands on a jar of William Sonoma pumpkin butter, I've seen recipes were you add a half of a can of pumpkin pie filling and brown sugar but I don't have the exact measurements...who needs them, just throw some in, and start mixing.

Let the ice cream soften a bit and place in Kitchen Aid mixer add the entire jar of William Sonoma Pumpkin Butter and mix. Once it's all incorporated put the ice cream back into it's original container and freeze.

Enjoy on demand!

Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Christmas Decorating...and Give Away!
The winner is: Janie and she picked the Dining Room, so give me a day or so and the Dining Room it will be.

Everyone is in that mode...decorate, decorate, decorate.  Christmas decorating is something as personal as getting dressed in my opinion.  I have noticed in my unofficial documentation of the subject that my friends and family have the same fashion style as Christmas decorating style. I've noticed that a friend is who more preppy and traditional in dressing, general goes with a plaid or red type Christmas, with touches of polka dots, Spode, silver and needlepoint stockings. Classic and tradition both in fashion style and decorating style.

The friends or family that tend to throw clothes on and run out the door (you know the ones...jeans, over sized shirt, scarf ). I call them The Basics. I am not saying there is anything wrong with that look, they keep it simple, no time for learning new tricks or adding current accessories. The friends who frown on my LV purse. They don't get it...I don't get them...but LOVE them! Their Christmas decor is usually simple as well...a wreath, a bow, Kraft paper...  There is nothing wrong with this look, I WISH I could be simpler. A simpler more basic look is beautiful and takes a talent to create.  I am what I am...a mascara wearing, lip gloss applying, ornament obsessed Texas lady who loves to decorate to the max for Christmas.  I love and appreciate all style of Christmas decorating, for years my friends and family have needled me for being so over the top, and I can take it. I know I'm not for everyone, but I love the difference in people.
These pictures are of my entry. I made the gold mini ornament garland (I'm making a tutorial video, hope to post this weekend), I am feeling the gold this Christmas. I'm not a glitter girl...yes I did just type that, I do not prefer glitter. It's pretty but I have horrible luck with it, I wear contacts and glitter gets on everything. Can't you picture it...me and eye patch and the best story I have is glitter scratched my eye when I was Christmas decorating.  I LOVE accessories but and an eye patch would be a hard fashion accessory for anyone other than Johnny Depp to pull off.  Anyway, back to my entry...it's large, probably large 15 feet wide and 30 feet long. We have marble floors in a black and white check pattern which is one of my favorite things about the house. A huge red front door and  the space is currently painted with black stripes. The stripes will be leaving in January, I've adored them but its time for a change. I think I would like some crazy eye catching almost shocking wallpaper...I know most people think wallpaper is a dirt word. I want the space to immediately fill any visitors with a thought of what our personalities are like...minus the crazy...wink, wink.

To narrow it down a bit, the mirror is the size of the wall, enormous and it's terribly hard to take a picture without being seen in the mirror. The lamps where a gift and from Ballard Designs. They are completely solid and weigh as much as a baby elephant. The frames are all sterling silver and thankfully were just polished two nights ago (thank you Lindsey). I've collected them since high school...or  should I say since my days of penny loafers and plaid skirts. You can spy my children in the frames and of course a few horses and two family portraits courtesy of Little Einstein and Pookie.
After making the gold mini ornament garland I had a few ornaments left over so I sprinkled them in the garland. The silver bowl are Reed & Barton (Revere Bowl  that everyone has) and they are filled with Christmas decorated and scented hand lotion and lip balm from Avon. They are little "thanks for stopping by" treats for friends and family. Another blogger Miss Janice (who will be doing a guest post for me) posted the treats she leaves for visitors to her home. I loved the idea and borrowed it. Thanks Miss Janice. You can find Miss Janice at www.EtiquetteWithMissJanice.blogspot.com

A closer look of the garland. The key to making one...LOTS and LOTS of ornaments and patience.

This is only the entry I have several more to share with you:  family room, the library, the kitchen & breakfast room, dinning room, master bedroom and a few other misc spots.

Side note: Please do not ask to see the children's rooms, I do not EVER show my children's rooms, that is their personal space and all though they have adorable rooms and I would LOVE to share...they do not wish for everyone to see and know where they sleep at night and wake each morning. They think it's strange and I totally respect that. They are young and should feel safe in their home as well have their privacy respected.
I get asked a lot why I do not highlight my children (Pookie and Little Einstein) more in my blog or my husband (The Judge)and I always say, "I started this blog and they didn't ask to be put in it, I respect that." When and if they want to share something for my blog I do and will post it.

Happy Decorating

Basic is the new "B" word

Around a year and a half ago a woman became strangely obsessed with me, to the point of stalking me, and by that I mean she was sending me scary email after scary email. Some days five or more emails, every one getting more and more disturbing. Eventually she sent an email threatening my children. That was it and I decided that I didn't really want to blog and stopped for a while and then I tried only blogging once in a blue moon and was always nervous I was going to wake up a sleeping dragon. It was an unpleasant experience and I do still watch over my shoulder for the dragon.  After that experience when I did blog I wasn't myself and was restricting what I wrote and posted. I didn't enjoy that type of blogging and it became almost a chore. I have all those email saved to this day, I save all emails from bloggers, school and business transactions...I guess you can add stalker to the list of saved emails. After that ordeal I realized how I was letting someone else determine what I wrote, thought, and ruin what I loved. That was the day I wrote the post titled S%&T Storm and decided that I would write anything I wanted and readers could stay or go, but I was going to post what I wanted, write the way I felt  and enjoy MY blog again. I did just that and I have loved it since. That experience taught me that I will never make everyone happy but it also taught me that I will NEVER let someone else determine what I write or don't write.

I mention all of this because after my post yesterday on my Christmas decorating/giveaway I received an email from a very angry blogger (who is also some what of a local gal). I'll call her Chic Mommy (not her name, not her blog name, )anyway, Chic Mommy sends me an email blasting me and accusing me of referencing her and her blog (remember she is talking about my Christmas decorating post from yesterday). I DO NOT understand her rant or accusations. I wrote about my Christmas decorations, my style and my friends and family styles, my love for all types of Christmas decorating...all I can say is WHAT NERVE!  I am a big personality and have openly admitted that I'm a lot to take in, but I think Chic Mommy now has that market cornered because even I wouldn't have the nerve to accuse another blogger of that.

Apparently the new "B" word is BASIC, who knew? I didn't get that memo but I have now! Part of her email was..."then make references on your blog to my work and "basic" style. I don't care if you don't mention my name and you can deny you refer to me but I get the odd feeling you do refer to me and I am tired of it. please stop...you don't understand or get what I do or who I am...that is fine...just don't look at my blog or instagram and I will do the same."

I had no idea one person could be so full of there self, Chic Mommy and I are not close, are not friends, she doesn't even know The Judge's real name! But yet she thinks she can place judgement like she did after my post on Christmas decorating. I have tried to be beyond friendly to Chic Mommy, I have invited her to many, many things and she has replied no to every single offer, I have answered all email from Chic Mommy and tried to be a friend ( I have asker her questions I would and have asked any of my friends). After receiving her email I called her twice and she would not answer I did reply to her email and even gave her an "out." I stated in my reply to Chic Mommy that I hope her email was a reaction to her having a bad day and that she really wasn't a mean spirited person. I got no response. Okay, then maybe she wasn't having a bad day and maybe Chic Mommy isn't a nice woman...I give up and should have a LONG time ago.  She ended her email saying she would not look at my blog again...well thank you, that's a gift right there, but I doubt it's a true statement. 10200750265

I will not be told what I can or can not blog about ever again and for someone to send me an email based on an "odd feeling" to Chic Mommy I say I make a better friend than an enemy.

Guest Post: Greeting Card Etiquette with Miss Janice

$

Hello y'all.  I'm Miss Janice from http://etiquettewithmissjanice.blogspot.com/">Etiquette With Miss Janice
.  I'm honored to be here today to guest blog for Miss Tikaa!  I love Tikaa's blog and absolutely adore following her on Instagram.  She is truly gifted with a fabulous style!  Since it's that time of year for exchanging holiday greeting cards, I thought I would talk a little bit about holiday greeting card etiquette.

Your cards can be sent anytime after Thanksgiving and should only be sent to family or friends who are NOT receiving a gift from you.  A holiday greeting card should always contain a personal greeting from you.  When preparing your cards, consider the following:

~If you simply cannot resist documenting the events of the year in a newsletter, please send these only to your family and closest friends.

~Don't enclose confetti please--it's so annoying!

~Never sign a card or letter "Mrs. Gibson," it may be "Janice Gibson" and underneath "Mrs. Kenneth Gibson."

~The proper way to insert a card is to hold the envelope so that you are facing the back of it.  Lift the flap and place your card into the envelope face up towards you.

~The proper spot for a return address on social correspondence is on the back flap of the envelope.

~An honorific is a complimentary title used to address a person and to denote respect.  Everyone is entitled to an honorific, some are fancier than others--Mrs., Mr., Miss, Ms., Dr., Judge, Mayor, etc.  Always use an honorific when addressing an envelope.  I will use my name as an example.  My given name at birth was Janice Kay Sessums...I married Kenneth Craig Gibson.  My name is now Janice Sessums Gibson--notice that the Kay was dropped and Sessums became my middle name.  This is a Southern tradition for a bride to use her maiden name as her middle name after being married.  This makes it easy for people who have known you all your life to recognize your name.

~Don't address the envelope to "Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth Gibson and Family."  The proper address should be--"Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth Gibson, Grace and Patrick."

~Unmarried girls are called "Miss" until age 21.

~Boys are called "Master" until age 8, then are called by their first name, and at age 21 are called "Mr. Gibson."

Use Ms. Janice Gibson, if divorced or married.

Use Ms. Janice Sessums, if married and keeping maiden name, or divorced and keeping maiden name; a divorced lady never uses "Miss."

Use Mrs. Kenneth Gibson, if married and going by husband's name, or widowed with children.

Use Mrs. Janice Gibson, only if divorced.

Use Miss Janice Sessums, if never married.

Another old Southern tradition is to keep the man's first and last name together; I.e., address/refer to us as Janice and Kenneth Gibson NOT Kenneth and Janice Gibson.

A married couple with one having a title and the wife still using her maiden name--Dr. Janice Sessums and Mr. Kenneth Gibson.  If the husband is the Doctor--Dr. And Mrs. Kenneth Gibson.

Plurals:

Mr.--Messrs.  (two or more brothers)

Mrs.--Mesdames

Miss--Misses

Ms.--Mses. Or Mss.

Holiday cards are a great way to stay in touch with those we haven't seen for a long time.  Be sure to Make Your Cards Memorable.  It's also important to consider the recipient when choosing your cards.

I'm sending this card to our friends and family who celebrate Christmas..."Merry Christmas, May your holidays be bright and beautiful!"

I love this card that I'm sending to our friends up North...rubbing it in that we're not shoveling snow--"Obnoxious, aren't we?!"

I'm sending these cards to our friends of the Jewish faith..."May you enjoy the timeless traditions and joyful glow of Hanukkah."

Now y'all get busy and get those cards in the mail!

* Thank you to the perfectly preppy and absolutely precious Miss Janice (of www.etiquettewithmissjanice.blogspot.com ) for being my first guest blogger. I adore her and know you all will to.  Thank you Miss Janice, you are an inspiration.

Merry Christmas,
Tikaa

Advent Calendar Idea and GIVE AWAY

$

I should have posted this sooner but you know how that goes sometimes...Sorry! Any who, my children have always enjoyed an advent calendar. In the past we have done the typical store bought ones...you know the ones with the door to a piece of candy, then we moved to a beautiful antique number with numbers on little doors and only big enough for coins, paper, or tiny chocolates and candy (but the excitement of the treasure what still BIG) then we advanced our advent tradition to small packages. As Pookie and Little Einstein have grown and with almost five years between them (didn't plan it that way but with a hip replacement and fertility issues...) I had to find a way to make it fun and interesting for both children. After talking to a friend she shared what she does for her children (who are the same ages as mine), thanks for sharing Anne.
Using small packages/bags was the perfect answer. I found these adorable Santa Bags at the ever so fun and fabulous Target. They are the size of a typical brown paper sandwich bag and the Santa flips up to insert your Advent treats.

To each bag I added a Scripture, each one leading into the next, ending with the birth of Jesus.
Of course each bag also has a fun treat. As I explained to my children, some days may have one treat to share and some days may have one for each child. I love the days with one item that encourages them to play together, for those days I found: magnetic checkers (day number 2, after I bought it I found out it wouldn't fit in the bag and had to wrap them), wooden tic tac toe games, notepads with games pre-printed on them, mini table tennis and on and on. I also did a few Christmas movies and note for Family Movie and Pizza night. Some of the individual treats I found: light up Rudolph noses (those should make some cute pictures), finger moustache tattoos (so funny), ear buds, itunes cards, notes with trip to get frozen yogurt and see Christmas lights,  hot chocolate mix and spoons dipped in chocolate, and more and more.  After laying everything out and strategically placing the treats in order I put them all in this gigantic basket we have.
Closer look of the bags, I found the numbers in my workroom left over from a school project. I'm sure I could have found pretty ones at Hobby Lobby or Michael's but I had these, so why not. I know I dropped the ball on posting this and again I am sorry. There is still time and children will not care if you missed a few days, they love the idea of a fun tradition and special treat.

A quick note (since I mentioned Target), I went bright and early to the crazy that was Target this Saturday for the Neiman Marcus big release. A friend, Shannon convinced me to get up before daylight ( I never sleep so why not), drive to her home (jacked up on caffeine), then rode to Target together to stand at the doors basically chanting "open, open, open." Yes we bought a few things, but I would say overall we were both disappointed. Not as fabulous as all the hype. Oh well Shannon and I had a fun day of holiday shopping and giggled all day about our early morning field trip. I picked up a few things for my master bedroom make over, new slipcovers are in the works (thanks www.michellefritz.blogspot.com, it was great seeing you Friday, your talent amazes me), I have narrowed the bed down (now to have it made) and found the mirrored chest for nightstands. Sconces and Chandelier are hung and beautiful...now I need to be patient and it will all come together. I must say I can see perfectly with my light bulb exposed at the moment...hahaha! I'm sure they will be back together soon...I hope so I have a Charity event/fundraiser at my home sooooooooooooooooooooooooon. The picture above is of Michelle's work, she made the table skirt and lamp shade.

Gingerbread House flashback

$

I did a very brief post on this Gingerbread House a friend (Kelly S.) and I built two years ago. I loved it so much and what we built it for was even better. Here's another look and more pictures.
To beginning our gingerbread house, we took to paper and worked out the dimensions and details. Thanks to John for his math minded help, without him our windows might have been out of sorts. Truly, thank you John. Once we had our details down we were off to collect our goodies: mints, gum, powdered sugar (lots and lots of powered sugar), eggs, food coloring, tic tacs, peppermints, fondant, sprinkles (we sorted out alot of sprinkles, we only needed the green ones and a few red), graham cracker crumbs (makes a great road) and on and on.  Once we started working we had candy EVERYWHERE! Now, the inspiration for our home, can you guess?
By the end of this blog you'll have an answer. It's historic.
Our blueprints...we meant business!

I had never used fondant before in my life, and we covered every inch in fondant before assembling the house (the historic home we were modeling is white, so brown gingerbread showing wasn't going to work). Fondant requires something I lack...patience! Once we finished that house I could explain fondant to the Cake Boss if needed. I piped all the windows, the window panes, the shutters and made each wreath and garland.
Kelly is super patient and I applaud her for that, she re-worked the roof twice trying out different looks and placement of the gum. That was a ton of gum wrappers! She also had much better luck (skill) at cutting those giant peppermint sticks, and she was great at mixing colors for the icing. We worked very well together and each had our strong points and interest. I would have not enjoyed doing the roof and Kelly seemed to really get into it, and I think she would say the tables were turned when it came to windows and wreaths. I liked that.

The back of the Gingerbread House (still under construction in both pictures). We tried to pay close attention to details and matching them with the real home. Now don't forget it IS gingerbread, fondant, icing, candy, and more candy...I would say we were close to the original home considering...we were using food. I should have taken measurements to give you a better idea of scale. I know it was over 24 inches tall and 30 inches wide with a depth of around 10 to 12 inches. It took both Kelly and I to carry it.
Notice the back porch has seven columns made out of the giant candy cane/peppermint sticks...for the record I think we ended up buying twelve or more! We had to use a SAW and cut them to make them fit under the roof, have you ever tried to saw a giant peppermint stick down to the size you need?  Five of the peppermint sticks didn't make it. Kelly kept at it and eventually ended up the seven we needed  and at the size we needed. The historic home our gingerbread house is modeled after has eight columns. We are not professionals, this was our first attempt at something this detailed and large and one column didn't make the cut in our design.
Everyday for almost two weeks Kelly  S. and I worked on this gingerbread house, hours and hours, juggling five children between us and activities. The experience was a BLAST! We had several re-do's and may have started over a time or two, but we stayed with it and the end result was a huge success for Habitat for Humanity.  Our gingerbread home ( as well as about 8 others) were auctioned off to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity in our county, to my surprise our gingerbread house sold for $3,500.
When we started out, we knew we wanted to build a big, detailed and historic home, well...What do you think?

We couldn't be happier with the way it all has turned out. Who would ever believe this was the FIRST time we had ever built a gingerbread house this size or detailed before.
Completed view of the FRONT.

Finished view of the back minus the yard (green sugar sprinkles). I am a firm believer if you are going to make a gingerbread house this large...do it with a friend! It's fun, motivating, time flies and the end result is great.

Have you guessed the historic home yet???
Front View
Back View

Our sugary sweet gingerbread house is Mount Vernon, the home of our first President George Washington.

Here is a pic from last years gingerbread making soiree. We are going to hit the icing and gumdrops this week...I'll post pics of the finished homes later.
I've always decorated a traditional gingerbread house with my children. I have made one for each of the children in my son and daughters class to decorate. I love it. It's whimsical, the children love it, your being creative all while enjoying the holiday. We make them every year and usually more than one. Last year I couldn't find my daughters gingerbread house after returning home and later The Judge told me that Harriet (our Airedale) ATE IT! High five to The Judge he cleaned the mess up and didn't leave a single crumb, I would have never known.

What ya think?? Any tips on types on food or candy to use on our gingerbread houses?  Have you made one before?
leave a comment, you never know there could be a giveaway.

Less Dishes to Do

I have great neighbors and wanted to do a little something to say Merry Christmas. I also like fun useful treats, so I came up with a quick, easy, and useful gift that is also very inexpensive
The first picture is the finished treat, scroll down to see the rest.

Stack paper plates, then napkins, and cups on top of the napkins. I added wooden forks and spoons (found on Etsy). Next I did the dreaded wrap with cellophane. I really do not like cellophane but I thought the presentation would look better this way rather than in a gift bag or basket. I tied the top with fun polka dot ribbon and added a candy cane.

I had bought these invitations after Christmas last year and pulled them out and printed:
Wishing you holiday cheer,
With less dishes to do this year.

I cut out the plate/cutlery from the invitation and attached to the ribbon.

A few of the finished treats for the neighbors.

Food Funeral

Recently I read a post or two from a woman who talked about "dream outfits" and "last meals." She'd talk about eating the brownie dough out of the tube and then the next thing I was reading is how she turns down jobs because she is intimidated by how she looks. I feel very sad for her, I do not have a weight problem but would imagine it is difficult. I did truly feel horrible for her and decided to say a prayer that she finds her confidence. Her post were sad, her DH (dear husband) didn't sound supportive and actually called her "spoiled and selfish" and will eat Reese peanut butter cups in front of her. She did seem to be ok with all of it, maybe she is and then again maybe she isn't but my heart hurt for her. From what I read she had lost weight and sounded giddy with excitement and I was so happy for her...then I got to the part where she gained it all back. I give her credit, she knows her obstacles and problem areas and said she keeps her clothes from a 14 to a 24.

All of that made me think and start preparing for all of the holiday parties we have coming up. I think it helps to mentally prepare yourself on what food you will be facing and deciding ahead of time what is "worth" eating. I don't expect to lose weight in December (well maybe) but I won't be gaining any by planning ahead and making smart choices (I'm not overweight but I have to watch and be careful). I need to have a "food funeral" for cheese. I've always said I am not against elective surgery and I'm planning on saving money for plastic surgery one day but not weight lost surgery. R.I.P. cheese

Hello girls, I'm Nicky over at Momma Gets Real... I'd like to believe, I'm a "tell it like it is kinda girl"... all bark... no bite.

Currently I'm living in a state of chaos. Which really is nothing knew... except we added a major ZING to this year by closing on our current home ... and moving into a new home 4 days after Christmas. I know... it's ridiculous. Who moves during Christmas time? Someone who has lost her ever lovin' mind. Have we met? Hello... "I'm Queen of Crazytown".

So... with moving, the kids school, church, and sport activities, ... Christmas and OH! ... having a husband that insists on deer hunting during this "festive" season... {I can't leave him... he cleans the bathrooms... for this reason alone... it's "death till us part"}... I'm a little on edge. But don't worry, somehow I manage to thrive in the chaos... like every good momma does. {wink}

Tikaa and I meant through Instagram... I ran across her glorious silver arm candy... and I stopped dead in my tracks... I promptly went through her feed... and noticed cowboy boots, antlers, pearls, Tory Burch, and diet coke. HELLO! I just meant my country soul sister. And, we've been dishin' ever since.

I was so honored when she asked me to guest post over in your neck of the woods with my Top Holiday Must Haves. Thank you Tikaa!

MY TOP HOLIDAY MUST HAVES:

1. We have a tradition each year that we do with our kiddos... I call it "Ode to the Tree Skirt"... I just did a blog post about it on Monday. I started it 12 years ago with Greta... and this year we finally filled up the skirt. I'm gonna have to add tiers or ruffles next year to it for future footprints. It's been our most favorite Christmas tradition yet. If you're just starting your family, if you're a grandparent, or teacher... DO THIS... it's fantastic.

2. My favorite white platters, cake stands, and serving ware... which is currently getting boxed up... boo. I know Tikaa is no stranger to gorgeous serving platters and dinnerware. It seems that during the holidays hosting and preparing meals is always imminent. Pretty plates are a must!

Confession: I bake my cakes from a box ... and I make cookies from a tube... but dang it... I make up for it in presentation!

3. Gift wrapping... it's the little things ... the details... that I can be OCD about. And I found out through IG ... I ain't the only one that painstakingly will arrange the presents just so ...you know- the bigger ones go in the back... and then descend by size... no two presents with the same design should sit right next to each other... you want a good mix... diverse group of presents. {Did I go to far with that one? ... I warned you... Type A cuckoo for coco puffs, that's me }

Anyways... I love to gift wrap... and I love to make things personal.

4. The Christmas movie line up. Our movies sit out all month... and they're on constant rotation. Henry will watch The Grinch 24/7 if I'd let him. I'm not gonna lie... with me packing up a house... he's can recite the entire movie.

Ain't no shame in my game.

5. Diet Coke.... AND if you're feeling frisky... with a splash of Captain Morgan. It's the holidays and it's cold out... we all need a little something to warm up, right? And if you really wanna be festive serve it in a pretty koozie ... festive flask... or monogrammed mug ... whatever makes you wanna break out into "Jingle Bells". However, when you feel the need to belt out Amazing Grace... put the Captain Morgan down. {wink}

Happy holidays!

Thanks Tikaa... I'm humbled to have you as my IG friend. ;-)
Nicky

p.s. I'm Nickyjack... if you wanna jump on the crazy train.

*Thank you Nicky for the guest post, you are ADORABLE!!!! I love your open attitude and fun flair. I can appreciate a girl who will tell it like it is. Good luck with the move, Have a very Merry Christmas. YOU ARE AWESOME,
Tikaa

First things first, yes I see the star is about to leap off the top of the tree and I have given up that battle. Our schnauzer Sara doesn't mess with tree but seems to be the right height to brush up against it and the star keeps tilting. I did for a brief minute think about wiring the star to the top of the tree but the last time I messed with the top of one of our trees SPARKS flew everywhere and The Judge was re-wiring the whole tree. It was not pretty! So I think we will live with it. The decorations in this room are semi natural by that I mean that I have real deer antlers in the tree as well as grapevine and pine cones, but the red berry's and birds are artificial (you know my experience with birds...strange to say the least).  We entertain as offen as possible, this is the room we build our gingerbread houses in and have dinner many nights (I prefer to eat in this room over the breakfast room, it's formal and I love that). I have a large workroom but prefer to blog here and do a lot of the time. It's the hub of activity in our home.

I've mentioned before I love gold. The lamps are gold, the frame and the mini ornaments in the garland are gold. The lampshades were made by www.michellefritz.blogspot.com and I'd part with the lamps in a second but hands off the shades. The room is 20 feet wide by 22 feet long and our table seats twelve. I did mention I love to cook and entertain, I may have more sets of dishes than LV handbags...it might be a close race. The furniture at the moment is all painted black with black and white gingham fabric on the chairs and used again for the drapes. The table actually caught on FIRE during a party once. Think napkin, chafing dish and Sterno...which lead to fire extinguisher. Note to anyone thinking of inviting me to a party...I can operate a fire extinguisher under pressure and in front of a large crowd (and have twice). The fire burnt the table top, the fire extinguisher left a grayish white film, and then came the sanding and painting. Oh well, I guess I know what to do this spring when I change the color.  No I will not be lighting it on fire!

Closer look of the tree, I opened up a grapevine wreath and cut it into sections then added to the tree with the antlers and go from there.

The children think it's funny that we have a tree with birds in it, considering all the bird drama I've experience. If Big Bird knocked on my door tomorrow I would not be surprised.

I'd love to say I've collected these Shiny Bright ornaments one by one over years and years. The truth is yes I collect them, but my collection started with a bang and by sheer luck! I was at an estate sale opened a box and wow it was full of shiny bright ornaments all for ten dollars. SOLD! From that point on I have added to them through the years. These are in a huge wooden bowl I found in the fields during Round Top antique show its about 26 inches in diameter and is 7 inches tall. I mention size of rooms or certain pieces because pictures can be deceiving and measurements give a better understanding of size and scale. The bowl of shiny bright ornaments is placed on our table in the family room.

A peek of the family room. I hate that burlap ribbon crap! It will be leaving this house and never returning as soon as the holidays are over. What was I thinking, why did I give into pinterest...I am a sucker! Oh well lesson learned...follow your likes even if it's not always popular. UGH, it looks worse in pictures! I'd set fire to it but a new fire extinguisher is on my list to pick up on my next Target run. At least the ornament garland is pretty and the Consuela boxes are a nice collection.

A small collection of decoupaged plates. I have a small obsession with a Houston designers work of all things decoupaged.

I am a whizzzzzzzzzzzzzz with the special effects on my camera, can you tell????  That's what I call a happy accident (wink, wink). A few years ago the children wanted colored lights on the Christmas tree and I of course wanted white lights. What do you do??? The Judge came up with an excellent idea, he took our already wired with white light Christmas tree and added color lights. The bonus was that he added two switches, flip one and only the colored lights come on, flip the other and only white lights come on, flip them both and you have white and colored together. Whatever the mood or consensus of the room then that's the color of the lights on the tree that night.
P.S. It's usually both!
Our tree is a ever evolving collection of Christopher Radko ornaments I have been collecting for twenty years or longer. Since before I was married I collected them, my mom's tree is covered in Christopher Radko it's a family tradition. The family tree will always be just that...a collection of ornaments through the years. The children pick out one each year, that will hang on the tree now and one day hang on their tree in college and their home. I love that we can look at ornaments and remember different times in our lives and different interest of our children.

The ceiling in this room are ten feet and so is the tree! My Radko tree topper will not fit and instead I have them in a bowl. Since buying this tree and the whole re-wiring with color and white lights I let the children pick out tree toppers. We have two current favorites: Santa and  a Reindeer both from Pottery Barn a few years ago. Currently Santa is jammed into the top of the tree with his head holding up the ceiling.

Slipcovers and lampshades are again all made by www.michelefritz.blogspot.com what can  I say she is an artist with a sewing machine. This room is 32 feet long and 22 feet wide, a huge rectangle. I'd like a seagrass rug and I could have one made but I hesitate because of our dogs. We love our dogs and yes Rupert is only 3 pounds and Sara is about 14pounds and probably would no damage running around on a beautiful seagrass rug. The concern is 100 pound Harriet the Airedale who just turned one and doesn't understand she is gigantic (I guess hanging out with petite little dogs did that to her). We love them all and they really are perfect...for us anyway.

A view from the other side of the room. The picture was taken earlier in the month so the gifts had not been added under the tree at that point. With the new year brings new windows, new drapes (ugh those are old) and new paint (we had a leak...insert frown).  Secretly the leak has done me a huge favor, this room will be brought back to life and made current!
This isn't the whole room, I can't seem to get in the right spot (maybe there isn't one) to photograph the entire room. Gee I must have a thing for lamps! I decided not to put all my nutcrackers out this year, my mom started collecting them I was child. I have several that are missing an eye (or now have one eye and one sharpie colored eye) and some that are going bald (fur falling off, they are old) and maybe one or two that have been officially retired. It's hard not to put out the old, one eyed and half bald nutcrackers I remember them from my childhood and in there glory days. They are a tradition.

A view from the other side of the room. I forgot to take that bench out! That does not belong in there (was extra seating for a party).  I'm trying to picture a simple, more modest room. Maybe, you never know what the new year will bring. I read another blogger recently who said..."appearing modest makes me look more spiritual."
I'm going to throw out any idea of trying to fool people into thinking I am modest or more spiritual because of it. I am who I am and I promise it's not a front for appearing any other way.

Hope you enjoyed another peek into my Christmas decorating. I still have the library, kitchen/breakfast room, master bedroom and I could possibly show y'all my workroom.

Leave a comment, what room do you want to see next??

Since I've talked about our dogs, please meet: Rupert, Sara and Harriet.
Rupert - 9 years old
Rupert is Pookies dog and that's that! He sits on her bed and waits for her to come home from school and then follows her all over the house, sleeps with her, sits outside the shower and waits for her, he only wants her. Don't go near Pookies room at night he WILL bite you. He loves Pookie!

Sara - 6 years old
I can not tell you HOW much I love this dog, I would carry her around in a baby sling
all day if I wouldn't look like a nut.

Harriet - 1 year old
She's a beauty and a sweet dog, I feel like we are still learning all about Harriet. She has no idea she's big, she does not know how to jump (thank goodness), you should see her try and get in the car...funny!  She's scared of the horses, loves Pookie, eats a bone in one bite (as well as a whole gingerbread house) and is not wild about men. We adore her.

Online Photos v. Real Life

(photo was taken this past Friday)

I wish I could...wait I could do what I am about to suggest...show profile pictures (any online photos) of different people and then show them (a current picture). I'd probably get a bunch of anonymous hateful comment...but it would be funny.
Recently a family member mentioned the comical reality of online dating they had experienced in re guards to online photos and real life. Then the other day I came across a picture of someone I know and was SHOCKED at the photo they were using of themselves. I'm pretty sure it was close to a year and a half  when she original posted the picture, at the time she commented that she had "photo shopped" the picture (well she had someone do it for her). In her original comments she said she had a few pounds shaved off (not in reality but off the actual picture). Now she's using the picture again. I know this is not a new idea and that tons of people use out of date, thinner and younger pictures. What I don't understand is WHY??? Let me start over...I understand the WHY they do it but HELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOO don't you think your photo and real life are going to intersect -EVER!
The picture I saw the other made me scream out loud "WHAT the H%^L.. she posted a picture that isn't even close to what she looks like"...WHY? Sure no one wants to look fat or old in a picture but if you shave off fifty pounds from a picture isn't that a little hard to explain when you run into someone who knows you? Am I not suppose to act surprised that her current picture is a smaller(much, much smaller) version of what I see in drive thur each week?  Do I ask if she is having medical concerns, or should I start planning a baby shower, a meal rotation of all concerned mommies, a prayer chain.
I do NOT get the reaction people are looking for when they post younger, thinner pictures of themselves. I'd want to shoot myself if every time I got online I was looking at a picture of years ago or some thinner version of myself.
How could that possibly make anyone feel better?

Resolutions

So the New Year is full swing, school will begin again Monday and routines and schedules will resume. I've been thinking about the whole New Year's Resolution thing...make some resolutions...don't. I usually do and on the whole it goes pretty good, not a 100 percent but over all I would say I don't completely trash the list and give up. Then I started thinking if I was going to make a list of resolutions should I share it, I know I'll be judged, some of my resolutions will be silly, quirky, off the wall, serious, shameless, etc... Oh HELL who cares, here it goes

1. Swear and drink more  (KIDDING, but I got your attention).

2. Drink more water and less Diet Coke (this one is iffy, sure I like a little sugar once in a while and cheese may be my BFF but Diet Coke sooths me like tequila comforts a alcoholic.) Maybe I could switch to caffeine free Diet Coke wouldn't that be like an alcoholic drinking non-alcoholic beer?

3. Sleep like a normal person and not a vampire.

4. Fix the "B" key on my laptop or maybe not...OMG I think I just did! I knew if I pounded away on that dang key long enough it would start working.

5. Shoot more, like in skeet and sporting clays. It's relaxing and I think about nothing when I get to practice. I like it.

6. Work on getting my card to judge horses, its always been ("B" key is working) odd "thing" I've wanted to do since Pookie started riding and showing horses when she was six years old. Horses are beautiful. I'm one step closer to this...may be taking my first classes in February (thanks to The Judge, he brought home information on classes). Feel free to laugh and roll your eyes.

7. Read more...read less! I don't know!!!! I read a LOT, maybe I should read less. WHO says read less?

8. Wear more mascara and lip gloss ( this is not possible)..but I'll try.

9. Stop worrying about what everyone thinks...this is basically next to impossible. I say next to impossible because I live in a small town and the color of your pee is discussed in the morning drive thur line while dropping children off.

10. be spontaneous...by that I mean - eat dinner on a blanket in the family room and call it a picnic, don't stress if soup and sandwiches are dinner, and take a deep breath and leave a dirty bowl or plate til the morning.

11. save (not stuff)...so I can buy a Celine bag.

12.Help my community by not texting in school zones while eating a Starbucks muffin, speeding through yellow lights and singing "we are family..."

13. purge (not my meals, my closets)

14. Blog more, inspire, style others, start my etsy store, give shopping tours of Round Top antique show each season (shop with the Josh & Brent...aka Fabulous Beekman Boys - www.beekman1802.com)

15. Memorize the periodic table...THANK YOU Little Einstein. I guess I need to add: purchase Periodic Table flashcards, app and wall chart.  Little Einstein wants to memorize it and thought it would be FUN if Mom did it with him. I'm all about my children and I'm looking on the positive side and am so thankful he didn't ask me to memorize fundamental Theorem of Algebra ( I suck at math).  Chemical elements organized on the basis of their atomic numbers, electrons and chemical properties in a strange way sounds way more entertaining than any mathematical theorems. Fingers Crossed!!!

16. watch more cute, tiny, furry kitten videos on you tube...while poking myself in the eye!

17. Buy less on eBay and more on QVC at 3:00a.m.

18. Eat more fruit...snacks (covered in chocolate).

19. Try really hard to get my picture on thepeopleofwalmart.com

20. be outrageous, adventurous and believe in myself more.

21. Stop planning for an attack of Zombie and buy less food and cleaning supplies...Wal-mart is not about to run out.

22. Never attempt swimming with sharks again...NEVER!!

23. Travel more...to casinos.

24. Take myself less serious but believe in what I can do.

What's your silly, serious or nutty New Year's Resolution??

Here are a few quick pics from a recent gathering of friends I had at my home. Nothing was special ordered (no banners from etsy or spoons with stripes or polka dots), I used things I already owned and decided it would be fine. To start I'll say that I love a crisp white linen cloth and napkins so that's generally the starting point. Rarely do we have a social gathering and use paper.  Most of you know that I love silver serving pieces and have collected many through the years and I use them all the time. I buy what I love but I also use what I love too. Why hide it away or save it for special occasions.

The picture below is of the tomato basil soup shooters I served. They were garnished with Parmesan cheese and a thin bread stick. Believe it or not months ago I needed glass shot glasses for a another horderve and found these clear glass ones at the dollar store (six in a package for a dollar and yes they are glass).  They have been very handy and held many different horderves since I have purchased them.

Another view of the soup shooters, one of  the sets of china I used and in the background you can see the scones.

This was a girlie evening, so pimento cheese and cucumber finger sandwiches were served to accompany the tomato soup shooters. Yes that is a mouse on the pimento cheese sandwiches, I usually put them on a cheese board.

Scones!!! I hate when I have scones in the house, but the event called for them so scones, mascarpone cream (no time to find Clotted Cream, my town is tiny and I had no time to make any...give me a break!), and orange marmalade. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! I had the roses in the house and only added a dozen or so to the mix and kind of threw together a few arrangements and finished up with pulling out my juliska bud vases and adding roses here and there.

I personally like Harney & Sons tea (the Paris flavor is my fave), and had some out, but once again my tiny town does not have a huge selections so Bigelow it was. It was about the evening and friends so I knew everyone would understand.

Closer look: the china I used for this evening was  Lenox (Citation Gold) and  Nikko (Empress).  All the silver in this picture was actually found on different trips to the Round Top Antique show and looked nothing like this when I found them. Keep you eyes open for tarnished and blackened silver pieces, I usually get the best deals and all they need is a little time and a lot of polish. I have been asked lately how many times a year do I polish my silver. I have tarnishing strips in the silver cabinet and some pieces that do get stored do go into dust bags, but honestly my pieces are polished twice a year (spring before Easter and November before holidays). Oh and I don't do the polishing, it's usually Pookie and this year another sweet girl helped Pookie and they did all of it in about six hours. They were INCREDIBLE!

I didn't put these in great order (it's late and raining and I've been trying to cut back on my diet cokes). Any who... with the tiny sandwiches and soup shooters the dessert were all tiny as well. mini cupcakes, cheesecakes and cookies. You have to be careful with all that adorable tiny food... "its so cute and little...oh crap I ate five mini cupcakes!"

Have a great week. Don't forget my Round Top shopping tours (post below this one, email for details)... great place to find silver! Actually it's a great place to find anything...

Style Me Pretty

This week I met with and styled Lisa. She was a ton of fun, up for anything and super willing to try new looks. She's was a self professed fashion "don't" but the end of the afternoon I had her on the "do" list and after our first shopping trip she was quoting me and  picking out fabulous pieces. When I first arrived at Lisa's she has already taken out EVERYTHING from her closet and piled it on her bed and had two rolling racks waiting in the wings. She was READY for a change! Lisa is a stay at home mom of three children, volunteers at their school and is currently working on selling there home, her days are busy and her style and wardrobe needs are for casual looks, with style and flare but simple and relatively easy. I sat down with Lisa and asked her a few questions, her likes, don't likes, favorite colors, fabrics, accessories, etc... Her answer to most of my questions, "I'm up for anything, I really don't have a favorite color or dislike anything." I asked who's style she admired and she said mine. Did I mention how super sweet Lisa is?!?!?!

I made close to thirty outfits out of what I thought Lisa should keep from her closet.  To start her wardrobe make-over I started a list of pieces to add, and a list of things she needed to STOP buying.  The above picture is a cute casual look with a plaid flannel shirt (Lisa is always cold) and cream colored cords, leopard belt and brown flats. I found out fast that Lisa loves plaid, and more than just plaid she loves flannel. Did I mention she's cold. First on the list of items she had to try and agree to stop buying was flannel plaid shirts. I even asked her to add at least two plaid flannel shirts to the donate pile ( i think she kept three and donated the others).

I also wanted to show Lisa that mixing was easy and not be scared of mixing patterns. The minute I asked her to put this scarf on with the leopard belt she looked at me and asked "are you kidding?" No not kidding. Once it was all together, she was shocked and LOVED it.

This is the same sweater and scarf as above but with a pair of chocolate flood pants she had. I asked her to put my gold shoes on and she almost left the room, she really didn't think she could pull it all off. She put my shoes on and took a look, then said "add gold shoes to shopping list" she was really having fun and getting into the whole process.

I loved these pants, black with a tiny bit of silver simmer with a bit of a snake skin pattern. She had only worn them with a black jacket. When I suggested she pair it with a white tank, pink cardi and silver belt she just shook her head and said "REALLY." I assured her, she put it on and then said "add pink cardi to the list, this one's too big and I love the look." We have already found a newer version of the silver belt  and a great pair of flats. Still on the look out for a perfect pink cardigan. I also suggested she look for a mint green colored t-shirt to wear with the newer silver belt we just found. Another way I thought these black jeans would be fun was with a great red sweater or black turtleneck (for a monochromatic look).

In the past when Lisa wore a cardi she generally matched it with the coordinating  tank (twin set look). She did decide she really likes green (perfect since that is the Pantone color of the year, Emerald...and I LOVE green) and she had this cute little green tank laying around. She was such a trooper but there were many times she asked me if I was serious when I handed her a look to put on. How simple and cute does she look: jeans, green and white tank, yellow cardi, Sperry's and basic brown leather belt. Easy and simple, but she looks adorable and put together.
P.S. Lisa, I really think that Gucci bag you have would be fabulous with the look.

Another piece of clothing I had to ask Lisa to refrain from purchasing was jackets or blazers. She is ALWAYS cold ( I wish I had that problem). I'm pretty sure about 10 jackets/blazers when into the donate pile. For this look I added a gray and white striped tank to cute read blazer, jeans and fun plaid gray flats.

"Can I really wear this together...Really????" Handing Lisa a blue and white striped button up, green cardi, and tan cords (I know they look white in the photo).  I also suggested that jean would be another alternative. Once on and looking in the mirror, she was sold.

This is the same green cardi from above (I did mention green is her new favorite color) and a more colorful t-shirt, brown leather belt, jeans and gold toms. I love the gold Tom's....I'm so jealoussssssssssssssssss ( can't find them in my size).

It's not exactly time for a full blown spring look, but she'll be ready. Great white pants, blue and white striped button up (collar UP) and simple flat with a gold buckle (later I found a cute pair of leather wedges in her closet, either pair of shoes would be great). Sorry for the head shot Lisa ( I tried to keep them all from the neck down.). She also has a white linen skirt and a pair of white shorts, LOVE white! Lots of options with white for the spring and summer.

This was a little dressier for "date night" a black trouser pant, printed blouse and black cardi with  an embellished trim. The blouse and trouser pant look fabulous alone too, but...Lisa is always cooooooooooold (so is The Judge). Nothing wrong with being cold and that cute cardigan will keep her looking incredible and warm.

I could go on and on showing you outfits, but I'll stop with the huge pile of donations. I can honest say that Lisa did not hesitate in putting pieces into the donate pile nor did she ever question it. She was so ready to make a change in her wardrobe and the way she thought about fashion.
The of items we needed to shop for was small: a few more color cardigans (she loves them and they work for her wardrobe), a couple of belts, a few tops, some basic jewelry pieces (we are starting with the wardrobe and adding jewelry a little slower), and about four pairs of shoes.
It's been two days and she's called to tell me that she's had tons of compliments and could not be happier and can't wait to go shopping. Plus she was so happy that her closet was purged and felt organized and like everything made sense. BONUS all around, great outfits and updates and an organized closet. Win, win!!

She'll receive all the photos (I took a picture of each outfit and any variations) and I suggest she keep them in her closet and a detailed list of the items to purchase.

Thanks Lisa, I hope you loved it as much as I did, the time spent with you and your wardrobe never felt like work. I love your enthusiasm and willingness to give anything a try.

Can't figure out what looks right with what, tried of the wearing the same outfit combos???? Spring fashions are hitting store and you don't know what to buy, I'd love to help.

My NyQuil Fog!

I haven't blog in almost two weeks!!! Eeeekkkkkk....I am a bad, bad, blogger. Sorry!!!
In my week defense I've been at a horse show with Pookie, who did AMAZINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG. Five first place ribbons, it was a great show. Pookie did an incredible job. After the Ft.Worth Stock Show with Pookie I went straight to Dallas for Market and came back the night before Little Einstein's birthday. When I arrived home Little Einstein surprised me with the news that he wanted banana pudding for his "special birthday snack" the next day at school.  I managed to get 22 individual banana puddings made in sock monkey cups with wooden red striped wooden spoons (Little Einstein loved it). Next I prepared for the rest of the weeks activities and weekend birthday sleep over. Then on top of everything else the last three and a half days my cocktails have made with NyQuil. My head was pounding and the oooey gooey congestion was just - gross!

Thankfully that's better. Cheers NyQuil!
Then at dinner tonight I thought my head may exploded from all the updating my family was hitting me with. At that moment I REALLY wanted sister wives, it makes perfect sense - one to help with the cooking and cleaning and one to help with all the children's activities. Okay it could have been the NyQuil, but then again I was a Big Love fan (minus all the children).  As I'm daydreaming of sister wives The Judge throws in some crazy idea of buying an RV. All of a sudden my dreamy visions of sister wives folding laundry and running to the grocery store were invaded by Cousin Eddie in a bath robe emptying his shitter on the front lawn! Literally I opened my mouth and out came "we are not buying an RV, I quit girl scouts when they made me go camping..and I need a sister wife!"
Now at this point I'm pretty sure The Judge thinks I've overdosed on NyQuil.

I must admit my behavior has been strange (in the past week), I've become obsessed with Shahs of Sunset and OMG I'm already half way through the second season of Pretty Little Liars. WTH!!!!!!! I'm googling hair extensions by GG  (she's on Shahs of Sunset) and lashes by Lilly (also on Shahs of Sunset). I think I'm craving Prussian food but scared to eat (have you seen these women on Shahs of Sunset or Pretty Little Liars). I may officially be having a mental break - Sister wives, Cousin Eddie, Shahs of Sunset and Pretty Little Liars...I need a trip to the city!  Sick or not I'm getting in my car and heading to Houston tomorrow, other wish I may end up with my hair highlighted with shades of pink or blue and earrings the size of dessert plates. Ugh!!!!!
